Building Community Relationships

Building relationships within your community is essential to the success of sporting events you host.  From venue support, event management, volunteer recruitment, fundraising and sponsorships, your local community holds the resources that rights holders look for when awarding events.

How do you begin?

  • Visit all prospective venues in your area. Get to know everything about them, build a relationship with their staff and learn who books their events.
    • Why?
      • A venue is usually the most critical component to a successful bid.
      • Their customers may become prospects and customers of yours.
    • Get to know all of the local clubs and sport organizations.
      • Where to find them?
        • Local news
        • Referrals
        • Google Alerts and Search Engines
        • Relationships with local venues
        • Club listings on national websites (i.e. National Governing Bodies)
      • Why?
        • They are the experts in their sport and invaluable resources in areas such as event management, vendor relationships, volunteers, and they may also have relationships with venues.
      • Reach out to local government; they may grant access to venues, provide support services, and/or offer financial support that could be essential to a successful proposal.
        • Parks and recreation departments
        • Police, fire and EMS
        • Department of Transportation
        • Elected officials such as a Mayor, City Council, County Commissioners
      • Be sure to include the business community in your outreach as they can may provide sponsorship opportunities and a pool for volunteers.

What tools are available to build and support your relationships?

  • Social media
  • Volunteering at sports events in your community
  • Join and/or serve on a board or committee for a club, organization or association
  • Create an event to bring your local sports community together to foster discussions and promote networking amongst themselves.

The Power of Sports

Not often will an NFL backup defensive lineman and a freshman forward on a Division III women’s basketball team make national news and touch countless lives. But in the last month we have seen the power of sports touch emotions and raise millions of dollars.

The story of Bengals defensive tackle Devon Still’s daughter, Leah, and her fight against pediatric cancer reached far beyond the NFL. More than $1.3 million was raised through the sale of Still’s number 75 jersey for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and its pediatric cancer research.

Just as dramatic, is the story of Lauren Hill, the Mt. St. Joseph basketball player who was diagnosed her senior year of high school with an inoperable brain tumor and whose only wish was to play a college basketball game. The NCAA allowed the school to move up the date of its season opener to assure Lauren would be well enough to play in at least that one game.

But her #layups4Lauren campaign, similar to this summer’s ice bucket challenge, continues, as she challenges celebrities and pro athletes to make a donation to The Cure Starts Now, dedicated to raising funds for pediatric cancer research. Her efforts, too, are raising hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“I never thought I would play on a college court, put my feet on the floor and feel the vibration of the crowd,” she said after that first game against Hiram College. That is a quote from someone who truly loves her sport and is grateful for the opportunity to play.

Every once in a while, the games that student-athletes and professionals play transcend sports and remind us what is really important. A 4-year-old who is undergoing chemotherapy and a 19-year-old grateful to take the court before the inevitable occurs remind us that sports can touch us all and can make a difference long after the final buzzer sounds.

Caution: Social Media at Work

By now just about everyone has heard about, and weighed in on, the reported telephone conversation between, allegedly, Los Angeles Clipper owner Donald Sterling and his girlfriend. While the authenticity of the recording is still being debated, along with the punishment, if any, for the owner, this is not a post about bad owner behavior.

This is about social media.

Because this whole Sterling phone call, if it indeed was him, started with his objection to his girlfriend’s posting on Instagram. Ah yes, Instagram, where you can upload photos to the world. She apparently did so, and he didn’t like it.

Instagram is just the latest in a long line of social media channels that people, businesses, teams and athletes use to stay connected, get out information and ‘skip the middle man’ of media and preach directly to those who have deemed they are interested by ‘liking’ or ‘following’ your page. We follow celebrities on Twitter to get a sense of their lives, we ‘like’ a team on Facebook to get inside information and, often, ticket and event deals.

So yes, most of the time, social media is a good thing. Except when it isn’t.

We could fill this page, and more, of reports of athletes tweeting before they think about some issue, then immediately taking it down.

For example: Earlier this month the Dallas Mavericks were fined $25,000 by the NBA after public address announced Sean Heath sent off a series of three not-so-flattering tweets aimed at the refs who worked a Mavs vs. Warriors game.

For many organizations, especially those who are strapped for cash and personnel (like many sports corporations) it seems logical to bring in a college intern (since anyone under the age of 30 ‘gets’ social media) and entrust him or her to your most direct line of communication to your followers. Often, it works out fine. Sometimes it doesn’t.

Social media is never going to go away, and in fact it’s a marvelous tool for tight-budgeted organizations who want to communicate to their fans and followers directly. But your organization needs to do it responsibly and regularly.

A few tips:

1)      Create an editorial schedule of what you will post (when and by who).

2)      Decide what channel will communicate what information (you don’t have to use all social media platforms, just those that make sense for your audience).

3)      Make regular posts on your social media channels so fans become accustomed to your news feeds.

Yes, social media is, in large part, a great tool for all of us to use. But we must remember to use it wisely, and strategically, to impart information, burnish the brand and share messages directly to fans.
